The Energy Community Secretariat commends SEEPEX, the Nominated Electricity Market Operator (NEMO) in Serbia, for the successful launch of the Serbian intraday market on July 26th, 2023. The new market segment operates based on a continuous trading mechanism, enabling market participants to adjust their positions closer to real-time. This flexibility is crucial for integrating renewable energy sources, which often rely on weather-dependent production.

With its ability to facilitate more precise balancing by market participants, the intraday market is expected to reduce the need for activating balancing energy by the transmission system operator. This development marks a significant milestone in establishing efficient wholesale electricity markets in Serbia.

In December 2022, the Energy Integration Package was adopted in the Energy Community, setting the legal framework for integrating the electricity markets of the Contracting Parties into the European internal market. This recent launch brings SEEPEX one step closer to implementing market coupling projects for the day-ahead and intraday timeframes.

The Energy Community reaffirms its commitment to supporting Serbia in transposing and implementing the new Electricity Integration Package, which is essential for ensuring market coupling and integration into the European single electricity market.
