Moldova’s gas supply under threat

23 November 2022

In spite of fulfilling its payment obligations, Moldova is under threat of being cut off from Russian gas supplies. Gazprom has made unsubstantiated claims that a third party - Ukraine - is decreasing the actual quantities needed for Moldova. All these claims are false as Ukraine’s gas transmission system operator is performing its transit obligations for months in spite of the war conditions. It is another example of the unreliability of the Russian supplier and the use of gas supplies as blackmail.

Director Lorkowski said: “The Secretariat refutes such false claims. The Secretariat will continue to support Moldova in diversifying its gas and electricity supplies and praises Moldova’s efforts to purchase non-Russian supplies of gas and store it in neighbouring countries. It is also essential that the international community stands firmly by Moldova. The Energy Rescue Scheme set up by the Secretariat is ready to channel donors’ financial assistance for Moldova to face the harsh winter ahead.”
