North Macedonia takes a step closer to EU electricity market coupling

1 July 2026

North Macedonia recently notified the Energy Community Secretariat that it has completed the legal alignment necessary to pave the way for electricity market coupling with the EU even ahead of EU accession. It has now entered the verification stage of the market coupling process—through which the Energy Community Secretariat and the European Commission verify that the legislation (the Energy Integration Package_ is aligned with the EU's, and that the conditions are in place for North Macedonia to proceed with the integration.

Integration will be key to creating the market competition and scale needed to motivate investor confidence and further drive a clean transition—increasing the share of homegrown energy that is increasingly necessary for energy security.

North Macedonia is the fourth Energy Community Contracting Party to enter this verification process, following Serbia, Montenegro, and Moldova. The Energy Community Secretariat welcomes this achievement and stands ready to support North Macedonia in ensuring the effective implementation of the new legal framework.
