Alberta supports Ukraine’s energy recovery
Alberta's donation to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund will support urgent repairs to Ukraine's Energy sector ahead of winter
The Government of Alberta (Canada) has become the Ukraine Energy Support Fund’s 38th donor, signing a contribution of EUR 160,000 (CAD 250,000). The contribution is being used for the procurement and delivery of energy aid ahead of the coming winter season, and in line with priorities set by Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy. Despite unprecedented donor support to the Fund, ongoing winterisation efforts require further coordinated action; priority needs identified by Ukraine amount to EUR 650 million. Contributions like Alberta's can help guarantee the timely procurement and delivery of critical equipment and services before cold strikes again.
"Alberta's contribution comes at a time when continued donations is directly proportional to the Funds ability to prepare effectively and mitigate states of emergency next winter," underscored Artur Lorkowski, Energy Community Secretariat Director. "By stepping up to support Ukraine, Alberta supports the Fund's core mission: to ensure that energy companies are able to keep electricity, heating and other vital services on for communities across the nation going through its fifth year of full-scale war.”
This latest funding from Alberta’s government reflects the importance of the province’s ties with Ukraine, which are built on longstanding people-to-people ties and institutional cooperation. The province is home to one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas in Canada, with approximately 370,000 Albertans of Ukrainian descent, and has welcomed around 65,000 Ukrainian evacuees since 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion. Alberta also maintains formal cooperation through three memoranda of understanding with Ukrainian partners, including on subnational cooperation and energy.
“For more than four years, the people of Ukraine have shown remarkable strength and resilience in the face of Russia’s unprovoked invasion. Alberta is proud to stand with Ukraine and support efforts that help the people of Ukraine access reliable energy and essential services. As home to one of the largest Ukrainian communities outside Ukraine, Alberta shares deep and enduring ties with the Ukrainian people, and we remain committed to supporting them,” said Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, Alberta Parliamentary Secretary for Settlement Services and Ukrainian Evacuees.
To date, over EUR 700 million worth of goods and services have been reported delivered through the Fund, directly supporting the provision of electricity and heating for communities across the country. These include critical components such as transformers, generators, switches, compressors, pipes, and other materials necessary to ensure Ukraine's energy system continues to function through attacks.
