Second Electricity Market Integration Forum Held at the European Parliament
The Second Electricity Market Integration Forum (EMIF) took place on 20 May 2025 at the European Parliament in Brussels, bringing together representatives from EU institutions, the Energy Community, national authorities, market operators, and other stakeholders.
The event addressed the ongoing process of integrating the electricity markets of the Energy Community Contracting Parties into the EU Internal Electricity Market. Discussions focused on the adoption of the Market Coupling Operation (MCO) Integration Plan, which is a necessary step before the technical implementation phase can begin. According to current projections, the intraday market coupling is expected by Q4 2026 and the day-ahead market by Q1 2027, provided that all technical and regulatory requirements are met.
Two panel sessions covered both political and technical aspects of market integration. Topics included current challenges, the status of national preparations, and the expected impact of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on electricity trade between EU Member States and Contracting Parties.
The forum was attended by Members of the European Parliament, representatives of the European Commission, regulatory bodies, energy exchanges, and ministries from the region.
