Inspiration and background:
I have always been passionate about sustainable development and caring for our planet. This led me to study and later work in energy management, focusing on the building sector in Moldova. With buildings responsible for more than half of national energy consumption, I saw an opportunity to contribute to a greener future while creating change at the local level.
For women, one of the biggest challenges is combining a demanding career with family life, especially in a sector that often requires fieldwork and flexibility. Motherhood can make this balance more difficult, but it should not mean stepping away from the profession. Support from family, colleagues and employers is essential. Women can remain competitive in the energy sector and continue contributing their expertise while also being mothers.

Short biography:
My name is Irina Apostol, and I am an energy specialist from the Republic of Moldova. I studied Energy Management and Environmental Protection, which shaped my professional interest in sustainable development and energy efficiency. Before going on maternity leave, I worked as an Energy Manager at Green City Lab Moldova, where I coordinated energy management services, including energy audits, energy efficiency projects and activities aimed at promoting sustainable development. I also worked as a University Assistant at the Energy Department of the Technical University of Moldova, teaching students subjects related to energy efficiency, energy auditing and energy systems.
Alongside my professional and academic work, I serve as a local councillor in my home village, where I contribute to local decision-making and advocate for sustainable development.
I am currently on maternity leave, but motherhood has not changed my passion for energy, engineering and sustainable development. Instead, it has added a new dimension to my professional journey and to the way I see the importance of building a more sustainable future.
