Gauer visits Energy Community Secretariat to prioritise EU energy market integration and the enlargement process

The European Commission's new Director-General for Energy, Céline Gauer, held a strategic meeting with the Energy Community Secretariat on 15 September, as the two institutions strengthen coordination across the enlargement agenda, the energy transition and crisis response. 

The meeting centred on the Secretariat's role in supporting candidate countries' legislative alignment with the EU, accelerating integration with the EU energy markets, pursuing climate and energy reforms in line with the EU governance model, and coordinating and channelling energy-related support in crisis situations, including Ukraine. 

Under the Energy Community framework, future EU member states can integrate with EU energy markets well before formal accession — energy acts as a bridge between candidate status and membership, making integration measurable, mutually beneficial and credible. The Secretariat drives this process through sustained, hands-on support — from aligning national legislation with EU requirements to putting reforms into practice.
