Advancing renewable energy integration: ECRB report on regulatory developments and flexibility
The Energy Community Regulatory Board (ECRB) Electricity Working Group (EWG) has released an in-depth report highlighting developments in the regulatory frameworks for renewable energy sources (RES) and flexibility within Energy Community Contracting Parties (CPs) addressing the evolving demands of RES integration.
The report explores the integration of RES as a critical tool in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing clean energy transitions. It underscores the shift from traditional feed-in tariffs to market-based incentive schemes, reflecting the Energy Community’s alignment with EU legislative standards.
Noteworthy updates include the introduction of competitive auction mechanisms, self-consumption schemes, and balancing responsibilities for RES producers, paving the way for enhanced participation in modern electricity markets.
Flexibility is another key focus, addressing the growing challenges faced by system operators due to the increasing penetration of RES. The report highlights the need for robust market environments that enable aggregation, streamlined connections, and effective network management. These measures aim to bolster the operational efficiency of both transmission and distribution systems in accommodating the dynamic nature of RES.
Additionally, the report provides a detailed overview of generation technologies across CPs, analyses the status of transposition of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources as adapted for the Energy Community, focusing on role of the regulatory authorities in the support schemes and highlights connection and access to network.
Prepared with contributions from regulatory authorities across CPs, this publication reflects ECRB’s commitment to promoting regulatory alignment and accelerating energy transition across the region.
