Future-proofing the Ukrainian renewables sector

At a meeting between the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko and the industry associations moderated by the Secretariat last Friday, the parties to the 2020 Memorandum of Understanding agreed to work closely together with the objective to further reform the renewable energy sector in Ukraine.

The sector has a huge potential to decarbonise Ukraine’s energy mix, and help the rest of Europe in achieving their targets. Its development was stalled by a dispute, which was resolved in 202O in a mediation process led by Dirk Buschle on behalf of the Secretariat’s Dispute Resolution and Negotiation Centre. As agreed on Friday, the follow-up work will focus on the reform of the Guaranteed Buyer, the reform of the surcharge system and the inclusion of additional support options such as contracts for difference and corporate power purchase agreements (PPA).
