ELECTRICITY

The 2002 Athens process marked the beginning of the electricity market reforms. During this initial stage benchmarking reports were made to assess the state of play. This in return enabled the identification of main impasses in respect to the acquis communautaire. The aim of the exercise was to take stock and then tailor best suited, corrective measures.

Thanks to early stage preparations, the work on the road maps coincided with the ratification process of the Treaty. By the time the Treaty entered into force, a set of tailor made policy instruments were on place and ready to be implemented.

The following pages highlight the measures designed to facilitate the implementation process. Firstly, the structure and modus operandi of the road maps. Whilst the road maps sketch the steps ahead, the implementation reports take stock of the progress achieved and challenges ahead. The regional market page outlines the key projects aiming at the creation of a single electricity market in South East Europe. The last page of the section  describes the concept of generally applicable standards.
